Tonight's Class...

Hi Everyone,

If anyone would kindly like to send me a few thoughts about what I missed during tonight's class, I would so much appreciate it. My Papa is in the hospital in critical condition so I have been with him all afternoon. I know how important the material we learn in class is so even a comment or two about some key points would be great! Hope to see everyone Monday!

Thank you,
Jill

  1. Hi Jill,
Sorry to hear about your pa, I will keep your family in my prayers. As for tonight's class, we just went back and forth with the issue of assimilation. Is it a good thing to assimilate? What are the disadvantages/advantages in regards to English language learners in our schools?
The answers seemed to vary person to person. Hope this helps. Take care.

  2. Hello Jill,

By your Papa, you mean grandfather or father? Either way, I hope for the best. My Mom is 74, looks like she's 60, but I still worry.

In class we discussed the Rodriguez Aria reading. Does he think bilingualism is good or bad? What's it like for immigrant children to speak one language at home and another in school? Should they be forced to speak only English at home (as he was)?. We did a group exercise about the Rodriguez reading. Then Dr. Bogad and we discussed the differences between ESL, ELL, dual language programs, and what is bilingual education anyway? We also drew straws to see which order we are to present our final projects. I'm 3rd. Since you weren't there, you might be 5th. I don't remember. First through 7th present on Monday, the rest on Wednesday (both in week 6). I would contact Dr. B for final project details though. Regards, Joe.

  4. Hi Jill,

Best wishes to you and your family.

Joe and Kelly covered all that you need to know about last class.

Thanks for sharing photos of your family and kitten on your blog. I hope Bailey is giving you lots of love. Pets are the best therapy.

    Take care x
